Best Hospitals and Health Systems to Work for in IT
What makes a workplace a ‘Best Place’ to work if you’re a healthcare IT pro?
Compensation and benefits are typically at the top of the list. But some developers rank “opportunities for professional development” as equally important.
Computerworld recently asked some 24,000 IT professionals what they liked and didn’t like about their workplace, and then tabulated the results to rank the 100 Best Places to Work in IT for 2017 .
The top workplaces in IT share a lot of common attributes, according to the report. All “offer paid time off and health insurance as part of their benefits packages, and nearly all provide flexible working options, employee wellness programs and reimbursement for technology certifications,” wrote Computerworld.
Among healthcare employers on the list, Miami Children’s Health System rates the highest, ranking as the #3 Midsize employer. Sixteen other hospitals and healthcare systems also made the list, as shown below.

Why Work There: This Miami-based provider of pediatric medical care, according to Computerworld, offers a work environment that prioritizes flexibility, independence and a sense of purpose, leading its IT employees to feel that they are contributing to a better future for the organization's patients and for healthcare in general. Why Work There: Tech team members are offered multiple training opportunities as well as tuition reimbursement, and a commitment to promote from within allows them to further their careers at the organization. Employees can take advantage of telework and flexible-scheduling options.
HCA, Nashville, TN
Why Work There: Training opportunities include weeklong and daylong programs that immerse IT employees in various healthcare settings. HCA IT employees can also participate in hackathons to support local nonprofits and mentor high school girls about careers in healthcare IT.
Kaiser Permanente, Oakland, CA
Why Work There: Kaiser Permanente offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes retirement plans, wellness resources and development programs. The company also has award programs to recognize employees' achievements and strives to help people maintain work/life balance by offering amenities such as on-site fitness classes and flexible work options.
