Meet Our Awesome Interns
The days are long, the pace is hectic, and the tasks can sometimes be, well, tedious, but we also think (and hope) our interns here at Healthcare IT Leaders have had some fun, too. We know that we have.
As summer draws to an end, we're sadly saying goodbye to the terrific young people who have helped us in so many ways over the past few months. But before they leave the building, we asked them to tell us a little bit about their experience and what they learned.
Andrew Edwards attends the University of Georgia and has plans to become a financial analyst after college.
What are you doing this summer for our company?
I'm responsible for identifying, qualifying, tracking and placing top talent in the Healthcare IT, Salesforce.com, QAT and ERP markets, both on a contract and permanent basis. Additional responsibilities include consultant data integrity and upkeep within the Applicant Tracking System (ATS). Work with talent to find the best fit for their skills and achieve their career goals.
What have you learned during your internship?
I’ve learned a great deal about the IT side of healthcare specifically about Epic and Cerner systems and their modules. I’ve gathered a better understanding of a career in consulting and I’ve gotten more comfortable in an office setting.
What is your best advice for others on how to get the most out of an intern experience?
Ask questions - it’s the best and easiest way to gain and clarify information; Be confident - whether it be on the phone or in the workplace; Don’t rush - it can seem that everything is moving too fast and you need to match that speed, but that can lead to sloppy mistakes. It’s better to work with accuracy and a comfortable pace then setting goals for yourself to get better; Work hard - effort and grit go a long way and people will notice; Don’t sit for too long - get up and walk around a bit. If you sit for hours and hours you can become tired and sluggish which can negatively affect your performance.

I’m interning with accounting doing data entry, filing, compensatories, reconcilliations, state tax information, and lots and lots of Excel documents
What have you learned during your internship?
I haven’t actually taken any accounting classes in school yet so I’ve learned a lot about how the accounting world works. I’d never actually worked in an office setting before my internship so it’s really been a whole new experience for me in all aspects. I’ve learned all the ins and outs of Excel and learned that accounting is definitely for me. Interning has helped me to see all the different types of accounting and has really helped me to be motivated to achieve my goals.
What is your best advice for others on how to get the most out of an intern experience?
I’d suggest to try and get an internship as early as possible into your college career because it not only improves your resume but it helps you decide early on if it is really for you. Intern in something you’re really interested in. To get the most out of it, learning about all the different things you may do while on the job post-internship is really important. I’ve found that asking questions about what you’re doing and what the people you work with are doing helps you see what the job is really like.
